Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney currently sits at third place in the Red Devils’ all-time top goalscorers list, however, it may take him a little longer to overtake Bobby Charlton’s 249 goals if Louis van Gaal continues playing England’s captain in central midfield.

The Dutchman has again opted for the deeper role for Rooney in United’s early clash with Stoke City, as van Gaal continues to try and juggle his wealth of attacking options.

There’s no denying that Rooney can do a job in the middle of the park, after all, he bagged a brace against Newcastle United recently and also set up Robin van Persie with that wonderful long ball assist two seasons ago, which all but sealed the title for Sir Alex Ferguson in his final season.
